Artist CV

Artist statement

My artistic practice explores identity, memory and cultural belonging through mixed media, abstraction and assemblage. Born and raised in Angola, my cultural heritage and personal experiences are central to the ideas that shape my work. Through art, I explore my relationship with my roots and reflect on how identity is formed and transformed over time.

My practice is deeply autobiographical, drawing inspiration from personal memories, emotions and experiences. I am particularly interested in how individual stories connect with broader cultural histories and how our backgrounds influence our understanding of ourselves.

Material experimentation plays an essential role in my work. I frequently incorporate African fabrics, exploring their colours, textures and patterns as expressions of heritage and cultural memory. For me, fabric carries stories and connections that extend beyond its physical qualities. I have also introduced chicken wire into my practice, using its enclosing structure to explore ideas of restriction, confinement and perception. The contrast between these materials creates a dialogue between cultural expression and the limitations that shape identity.

Through research, reflection and experimentation, I develop work that connects personal narratives with wider questions of belonging. Ultimately, my practice is an ongoing journey of self-discovery and cultural reconnection, inviting others to reflect on their own experiences of identity, memory and heritage.
